Some breastfeeding women may develop breast infections (mastitis) or abscesses in their breast during lactation, and the information shared at this event will help health professionals learn the proper treatment options and methods.

Dr. El-Eid’s talk will cover the differences between lactational and non-lactational breast abscesses, as well as treatment plans including antibiotic regimens and surgical options. Dr. El-Eid is known nationally for her expertise in breast biopsies and surgeries, as well as for her breast cancer research. Additional information from the event will cover treatment plans for ongoing breast infections in lactating women, as well as techniques for avoiding future lactational breast infections.

This event is perfect for professionals who encounter breastfeeding moms, including obstetricians/gynecologists, pediatricians, lactation consultants and nurses, as well as support staff in these medical areas. Continuing Medical Education (CME) units are available for physicians, and LCERP credits are available for IBCLCS, as well as Continuing Education for nurses. The free event will include light refreshments.

Dr. El-Eid graduated from medical school from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb., in 1990, and did a general surgery residency at Nassau University in Long Island, N.Y., and a critical care fellowship at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. She had been in practice as a breast surgeon in Kingston, N.Y., since 1996 and recently moved to Las Vegas to provide comprehensive breast care services.

Dr. El-Eid reports that she is the first breast surgeon in Las Vegas certified in both ultrasound and stereotactic breast biopsies. She proctors stereotactic procedures and is one of the reviewers for ultrasound certification applications nationally under the American Society of Breast Surgeons. Dr. El-Eid is a member of the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG), providing the latest breast cancer research under the National Cancer Institute sponsorship. She has served in New York as a Cancer Liaison Physician and was the recipient of the Cancer Liaison Physician Outstanding Performance Award for 2006 from the Commission on Cancer under the American College of Surgeons. Dr. El-Eid has been elected as one of the American Cancer Society ambassadors to Washington, DC, lobbying for cancer care.

The Southern Nevada Breastfeeding Coalition of the Breastfeeding Task Force of Nevada was formed to assist professionals and the community who are dedicated to protecting, promoting and educating others on the importance of breastfeeding, and supporting the breastfeeding family. Its mission is to disseminate accurate information about breastfeeding, and promote breastfeeding as the norm for infant nutrition.
